Jane Seymour's Underwear
The
lowest layer consists of a linen shirt and linen stockings
decorated with embroidery of black and around the neck white silk
made by Holbein stitch (so-called blackwork and whitework) made
according to the portrait (Hans Holbein, 1537, The royal picture
gallery Mauritshuis, Haag); around the neck and on the stockings
there are motives of embroidery on the sleeves on the other
version of the portrait of Jane Seymour (Hans Holbein, 1536–1537,
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wien). The stockings are made according
to directions in the book of S. Thursfield: The Medieval Tailor’s
Assistant and are fastened under the knees with tablet-woven silk
garters. According the book The Tudor Tailor there is no evidence
that women wore drawers in this period, for that reason any
drawers are the part of this outfit. |
