Baroque Overgown
For a
formal or court dress, an overgown is worn over the underbodice
and the petticoat. This overgown is made of red satin with white
damask lining and consists of the skirt pleated by cartridge
pleating and the open bodice laced by red ribbon with short
sleeves. In the waistline, which is typically quite high, is a
ribbon sash, on which some necessary things can be fastened, for
example a fan. The whole dress is decorated with laces, ribbons,
braids and pearls (of course false). This dress presents an early
baroque woman’s dress dated back to circa 1635 and is inspired by
period pictures – engravings of Bosse and paintings of Van Dyck or
Rubens (for example painting “Garden of Love”). |
